Counting Games

Write numbers from 1 to 10 on cardboard circles. Ask the child to attach as many clothespins to the circle as the number written on it. This game develops both counting skills and fine motor skills at the same time.

Hide numbers written on small pieces of paper around the house. Ask the child to find the numbers in order and jump as many times as the number they found (for example, if they find 3, they jump 3 times). This game combines numbers with physical movement, making learning much more permanent.

3. Grocery Store Game

Arrange toys like a 'market' and put price tags (between 1-5) on each one. Give the child a certain number of coins or buttons and ask what they can buy with that money. Although it is too early for the concept of change, you can start with simple questions like 'If I buy a 3-lira toy with 5 liras, how many liras do I have left?'

Counting principles

To understand if children have truly learned to count, pay attention to three principles: (1) Counting each object once (one-to-one correspondence), (2) knowing the stable order of numbers (2 comes after 1), (3) understanding that the last number said represents the total quantity (cardinality). All these principles develop over time.

Shape Concept Games

Recognizing geometric shapes helps children make sense of the world around them. Circle, square, triangle, rectangle these are the building blocks of our environment.

1. Shape Puzzle

Cut circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles from cardboard in different colors. Ask the child to place these shapes onto outlines drawn on paper. Then try creating a picture using the same shapes: a sun from circles, a roof from triangles, a house from squares.

2. Shape Hunt at Home

Give the child a shape (e.g., circle). Ask them to find circular objects around the house: clock, plate, wheel, button... This game helps the child connect abstract geometric concepts with the concrete world.

Pattern Games

Patterns are one of the most fundamental concepts in mathematics. Recognizing, predicting, and continuing a pattern forms the basis of algebraic thinking later on.

1. Color Patterns

Create a simple pattern like red-blue-red-blue and ask the child to continue it. Gradually make the pattern more complex: red-blue-yellow-red-blue-yellow, or big-small-big-small. Beads, buttons, or LEGO bricks are great materials for this game.

2. Sound Patterns

Create sound patterns like clap-tap-clap-tap and ask the child to repeat them. This game develops auditory perception and sense of rhythm while also supporting mathematical pattern recognition.

Comparison and Measurement Games

Comparisons like big-small, long-short, heavy-light form the foundation of a child's logical thinking.

1. Tower Race

Build towers with blocks or LEGOs. Ask questions like 'Whose tower is taller?' and 'How many blocks is the difference?' This game develops the concept of length and the skill of finding differences.

2. Weighing Game

Make a simple scale by tying two bags to a hanger. Ask the child to weigh different objects and predict which one is heavier. This game develops both prediction skills and the concept of mass.

Classification Games

Classification is perhaps one of the least noticed but most important math skills. Grouping objects by common features develops the child's logical thinking.

1. Color and Shape Classification

Give beads or buttons in different colors and shapes. Ask the child to classify them first by color, then by shape, and then by both color and shape. This game forms the basis of the set concept.

Math in Daily Life

Math can be learned not just through games but also through daily routines. Here are ways to naturally incorporate math throughout the day:

  • While cooking: 'The recipe calls for 3 eggs, we cracked 1, how many eggs are left?'
  • While climbing stairs: Counting steps, asking 'how many steps are left?'
  • While shopping: 'There are 5 apples in the basket, if we add 2 more, how many will there be?'
  • While undressing: 'When you take off your sock, how many socks do you have left?'
  • At bedtime: 'Let's do 10 stretches, then go to sleep.'
Language matters

Research shows that the more parents use quantity expressions like 'three of them,' 'bigger,' 'the same number' in daily conversation, the better children's math skills develop. Mathematical language is the carrier of mathematical thinking.

How Useful Are Digital Tools?

When used correctly, digital applications can support preschool math learning. However, screen time should be limited, and apps should require active participation rather than passive consumption. An app should not just show the child numbers but encourage them to touch, drag, and make choices. The best learning still happens with physical objects, through play, and with adult guidance.
